Natural Stone Sculptures has been blessed with one of those rare occurrences in the business world today. Whether by luck or by the shared appreciation of the work we do, we have become a true family. As a family, our care and respect for nature and for each other, makes for a wonderful work environment. This we take with us to each job, insuring a garden constructed from a single vision and not a combination of separate elements trying to create a unified design.

Our Staff Associates include Mac Hulslander, a certified plant professional with a degree in landscape gardening. Mac also brings three years experience of living in Japan and fluency in the Japanese language. In addition to his interest and study of Japanese and natural gardening methods, Mac brings a personal interest in sacred place making, labyrinths, and has helped set stone for the Columcille Megalith Park, a Celtic center located in Bangor, Pennsylvania and featured in Stone Circles.

Note:In the interests of saving valuable plant life (flowers, groundcovers, shrubs and trees) Natural Stone Sculptures now serves as a contact point for sharing information about the location of potential rescue sites i.e., before the bulldozers hit! If you know of a situation where such destruction is imminent (highway widenings, housing or commercial development, clear cuttings, etc.), please let us know by calling (919) 303-9745. And, if you are interested in digging them up for transplanting, please let us know that, too, by calling the same number and giving us your name and a way to contact you. We will take the responsibility of gaining all necessary permissions for their removal. Thanks!

Another artisan working regularly with Natural Stone Sculptures is Omar Llanas. Omar developed his interest in Japanese-style gardens and structures while training with Phil Hathcock in the Japanese martial arts. He is an accomplished carpenter and expert in making use of natural and recycled building material in conjunction with stone — whether its in making a Japanese-style Azumaya (pavilion) tea house, machiai (waiting shelter), torii (gateway) or Japanese-style privacy walls.

In the event of a large swimming pool or pond project, Natural Stone Sculptures incorporates the work of Larry and Edward Plyler. With over 30 years of pool building experience, Larry»s expertise is invaluable as some of our ponds require multiple skimmer, filter and pump operations. Larry and Edward»s work can be viewed in the water features section.

Once construction, placement of stones and boulders, and the planting of large plants have been completed, it is time for the "Detail Person" to come in. Fran Duncan has been putting the finishing touches on Phil»s landscapes since she trained under his father, Arch, back at Blue Ridge Stone Company. Planting smaller accent plants, installing moss beds, mulching the planted areas and making sure everything is just right, is her specialty. It must be said, Fran»s love for this work rarely allows her to wait till the end of construction before she makes an appearance. She can almost always be found, at any stage of the process, working right along with the rest of us.
